Accessibility

To allow people with disabilities to use your website it is important to abide by accessible guidelines set out by the Web Accessibility Initiative. These guidelines allow people with various disabilities to perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with your website which would otherwise not be possible due to website or software barriers.

Creating accessible websites can also benefit people without disabilities, such as people with slow internet connections, people using low spec PCs or people with temporary disabilities such as a broken arm.

What Accessibility Services Can I Offer?

All websites that I create are developed to best practice standards and automatically include many accessible standards. The Web Accessibility Initiative has a set of checkpoints that allow you to gauge how your website meets the assigned priority levels. The Web Accessibility Initiative states:

  • Priority 1
A Web content developer must satisfy this checkpoint. Otherwise, one or more groups will find it impossible to access information in the document. Satisfying this checkpoint is a basic requirement for some groups to be able to use Web documents.
  • Priority 2
A Web content developer should satisfy this checkpoint. Otherwise, one or more groups will find it difficult to access information in the document. Satisfying this checkpoint will remove significant barriers to accessing Web documents.
  • Priority 3
A Web content developer may address this checkpoint. Otherwise, one or more groups will find it somewhat difficult to access information in the document. Satisfying this checkpoint will improve access to Web documents.

In general, it is possible to attain priority 2 and 3 accessible websites without compromising on design and layout.
